Benefits of Working as a Locum Tenens Provider

Locum Tenens is a Latin phrase that means, “to hold a place.” Locum tenen providers help fill in at facilities that have a shortage of providers on a temporary basis for a range of a few days up to three months or more.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, by 2025 there will be a deficit of up to 90,400 physicians. As the shortage of medical providers continues to grow throughout the U.S, the demand for locum tenen providers is on the rise.  Becoming a locum tenens provider has many advantages.

  • Working as a locum tenens provider gives you the freedom and autonomy to create your own schedule, have a healthy work/life balance, spend more time with family, and the time to do things you enjoy doing outside of medicine.
  • Love to travel and explore new places? Locum tenens allows you to meet new people and work in places you’ve never been.
  • It’s not uncommon facilities use locum tenen providers while they recruit for the right permanent provider in their community. Often times, locum tenen jobs and turn into permanent opportunities.
  • Full time professionals do locum tenens as a way to earn supplemental income.
  • New graduates do locum tenens to help supplement a practice they are trying to build, to use the opportunity to travel to get a better understanding of what type of practice setting they are looking for, to gain experience, or as a way to bridge the gap between residency and fellowship.
